Translating the idea of phantom limbs (whereby someone experiences vivid sensations pertaining to a limb that is essentially not there) within a more general framework, we can perhaps think of it as "something that is there but not really there"? So when I saw these images, in which mathematical equations occur in the natural environment, I saw the potential of translating this idea into visual communication.
